Taste of Freedom was an intimate culinary tribute rooted in remembrance, resistance, and the richness of Black culinary heritage. In partnership with Black Apron, guests gathered in the heart of downtown Durham for an evening where every dish told a story—and every story honored the legacy of those who came before us.
From the signature cocktails crafted by Shake Sumn to the heartfelt tribute honoring ancestor Nellie Hart, the night invited guests to reflect, remember, and reclaim. Each small plate was more than a meal—it was a time capsule, curated to celebrate the stories of survival and the joy of Black freedom.
The space was filled with warmth, community, and intention. A Legacy Table activation featured family heirlooms and photos brought in by attendees, turning the room into a living archive of memory.
Taste of Freedom reminded us that food is more than nourishment—it’s a vessel of truth, a keeper of culture, and a celebration of our collective power.
